Why We Whisper by South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint
a book report, Olivia Jenney
To "promote the general welfare", writes Jim DeMint is clearly part of our Constitution. However, he continues, when we are bombarded by alternatives about freedom of speech, abortion, gay marriage, education or secular, value free options, we may be appalled but we don't say a word!
What excellent choices for us to make a fuss about - these are certainly among the critical issues of the moment. But, how are we to address them? In his challenging book, Senator DeMint writes how to do this. He says to call the wrong choice illegal, the right choice, legal. Unfortunately, I seriously question his ideas about how to do it. I think he's suggesting we change our approach from "Yes but, have you considered another way" to "You shall call this illegal".
For example, I looked up the meaning of legal in Webster's Collegiate Dictionary: Legal does not mean right or correct as the Senator suggests, but "of or relating to law; deriving authority from or founded on law: de jure. Having a formal status derived from law without basis in actual fact. And illegal does not mean wrong, but "not according to or authorized by law." This is a mouthful, but so worthwhile thinking about.
Too bad. Most of his book is terrific encouragement for us to speak out on his powerful laundry list of America's contemporary problems. Now is the time, Ladies, we're in for a bumpy ride!
